The new system of child maintenance aims to ensure that parents living apart understand their responsibilities and take appropriate action to provide financially for their children.
From April 2010 there are more choices open to parents claiming benefits, being in receipt of child maintenace no longer impacts what you can receive in benefits. This will help to get more money to those most in need.
Parents are offered information and support on the options for arranging maintenance, to help them select and put in place the arrangement (private or statutory) best suited to their circumstances.
